But it still seemed like a small drop in a very large bucket. Almost all signings were white authors, almost all featured books were by white authors, and I had to make a real effort to try and track down books by authors of color. Theres still a long way to go until Book Expo shows real diversity, but I can offer these 25 books by authors of color featured at BEA 2015. Essays by Funny People on TV This is almost getting large enough to become a real genre. By far one of the biggest draws this year was  Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling after the wild success of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (the new book also seems to suggest Mindys love for question marks). Kaling navigates friendship, romance, beauty, and celebrity in this collection out in September from Crown. Right up there in the buzz-building category is  Modern Romance by stand-up comic and Parks Recreation cast member Aziz Ansari. Memoirs I spent years wanting to be a doctor when I grew up (spoiler alert: it didnt happen)  and I still have an affection for the medical memoir genre, so I was excited to get a copy of Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctors Reflections on Race and Medicine by Damon Tweedy, M.D. The extraordinary thing about Tweedys book is that it is less about medical anecdotes  and more on just how much race matters for doctors and patients. Out in September from Picador. For another clear-eyed discussion of race in the modern world, theres  Between the World and Me by Ta Nehisi Coates, the popular and controversial writer for  The Atlantic. Coates is poised to be the definitive voice on race in America so theres a lot of interest in this new quasi-memoir that deals with Coates personal history and the charged racial history of the US. September release from Spiegel Grau. There are three more names you may recognize among upcoming memoirs. Actually, you may not recognize the name Sonia Manzano, you probably know her as Maria from Sesame Street. Manzanos upcoming memoir is  Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx. Her memoir covers her difficult childhood through her adulthood as an actress. Out in August from Scholastic, its appropriate for adults as well as children 12 and up.  Keep A Knockin is a memoir out in August from drummer legend  Charles Connor full of inside stories from his life in the music business. Finally, well-known character actor John Leguizamo has adapted his Broadway show  Ghetto Klown  about his life from childhood to Hollywood into a graphic novel with illustrators  Christa Cassano and Shamus Beyale, to be released in October. Pulitzer Prizewinners Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks made an appearance to sign the book version of Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 3). Parks won the Pulitzer for her play  Topdog/Underdog  and her newest play was a 2015 Drama finalist and has been called her best work yet even though its only the first three parts of a nine-play cycle. The play is set during the Civil War and centers around a slave who is offered his freedom to fight for the Confederacy. Fun fact: just because you win a Pulitzer doesnt mean you cant sign a book with little star and heart doodles. Out this month. Oscar Hijuelos died in 2013 and won the Pulitzer for  The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love in 1990. His posthumous novel  Twain and Stanley Enter Paradise  is about the real-life friendship between Mark Twain and explorer-journalist Henry Stanley (the man who uttered the famous line, Dr. Livingstone, I presume?) on a trip to Cuba. Hijuelos had worked on the book for years and finished shortly before his death. Out in November. Recent Releases Not all books featured at BEA are upcoming releases. Sometimes publishers celebrate books theyve just released or books that have been particularly successful. In the former category is  Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis, one of my favorite books of the year so far, which follows the titular group of dogs after two bored gods make a bet to give them human consciousness. For a book about dogs, it has an awful lot to say about humanity and morality and has a great plot to boot. Out now from Coach House Books. Cixin Liu is one of the most popular authors in China. Tor is releasing his Three-Body Problem trilogy in translation in the US, with the second novel,  The Dark Forest, coming this summer. Liu was at BEA to sign the first book,  The Three-Body Problem  which includes Chinas cultural revolution, a secret cabal, a string of suicides, and a virtual reality game- it was one of Book Riots best books of 2014. Another of our best of 2014 picks thats recently out in paperback,  Everything I Never Told You,  brought author Celeste Ng in for a signing. A huge success that ended up being named Amazons Best Book of the Year, theres no sign of things slowing down for this family drama-slash-mystery that looks at a mixed-race family in 1970s suburban Ohio. If you worry that you have too many books in your life and not enough adventure, you may want to pick up the new release from Europa Editions,  Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness by Jennifer Tseng. The book follows a middle-aged librarian whos pulled out of her mundane life and family when she becomes obsessed with a teenage boy and befriends his mother. Billed as a book thats both erotic and meditative, its one I really regret not getting into my suitcase. Young Adult Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon had a line so long I had no chance of getting a copy. Im a little weary of novels featuring characters with strange diseases who cant leave their homes, but Im making an exception for this book. Maddie is allergic to the world. She is also sure she will fall in love with the boy wearing all black who moves in next door. A story told through many media, including diary entries, charts, and illustrations (drawn by the authors husband), Im really excited for its release in September from Delacorte Press. Adi Alsaid made a big splash with his debut, the road trip YA  Lets Get Lost, that got plenty of John Green comparisons. His new novel,  Never Always Sometimes,  follows a pair of best friends who write down a list of high school clichés and vow to avoid them. Until they decide maybe it would be fun to do them all. I love the premise, since some YA can rely too strongly on those clichés, and Im excited to see how they get turned on their head. Out in August. Book Riot Live speaker  Daniel José Older was at BEA promoting his upcoming book,  Shadowshaper, out this month. It features fantasy and graffiti and a Latina heroine and magic and a very, very long list of glowing reviews and blurbs that give it a spot on anyones summer reading must list. Buy it. Then see if you can get him to sign it when youre hanging out with him in November. More Happy Than Not  by Adam Silvera brings a little magical realism to the difficult life of Aaron Soto, a gay, Latino teenager in the Bronx. Theres a new memory-relief procedure that could help him forget all the things that have made his life so tough and help him be someone newer and better. But it could also mean he loses his new love interest and even his own identity. Like the other YA titles here, it also comes with impressive blurbs and some great buzz. Historical Fiction The Book Riot crew noticed a lot of big, big books at BEA this year and one of them was The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee. If the thought of 576 pages intimidates you, dont worry, its not out until February so you have some time to prepare. Chees second novel is about a French opera star looking back on her unlikely rise to fame as she tries to find out the anonymous author of an opera based on her own life. Also, just look at that cover! The Distant Marvels by Chantel Acevedo is set during Hurricane Flora in 1960s Cuba. The book centers around Maria Sirena, a storyteller who may be telling her last story during the deadly storm. Her story goes back generations to trace her family and her country through decades of war and trouble. A modern riff on Scheherazade that celebrates the art of the story. Thrillers Its not much of a surprise that both of the foreign thrillers on this list are from Soho Crime, an imprint doing a fantastic job finding stellar crime fiction from around the globe.  Smaller and Smaller Circles by F. H. Batacan has been called the first Phillipine crime novel. Its a literary noir set in a community so poor they live in and scavenge off a massive dump site. After a string of murders, the only one who can help is Priest-slash-Forensic-Anthropologist Father Gus Saenz. Now that is a detective I dont think Ive seen before. Im really intrigued. Out in August. The Gun  is the debut novel by Fuminori Nakamura and the fourth that Soho Crime has released. And Soho says there are more novels on the way as they continue to have them translated.  The Gun  combines the feel of old school noir but places it in a modern world of cell phones and puts a college student at its center. Guns are illicit and dangerous items in Japan, viewed very differently than they are in the US, and when Nishikawa finds one on a dead body, he takes it and it becomes the source of a growing obsession. I am really excited about so many of the books on this list. But Id be even more excited to go to BEA next year and see more panels featuring authors of color, and more books by authors of color featured prominently. ____________________ Book Riot Live is coming! He was charged with a crime he did not commit. His side of the story was not believed because he was black, which really shows the amount of injustice during the time the novel was set in. Through the whole trial, he did not retaliate at the white people, he did not get mad because he was improperly accused, he just showed the level of respect which everyone deserves. He handled the injustice with a manner reserved only for gentlemen, which is a good description of what he really was. The third person to suffer injustice in the novel was Boo Radley. Many accusations were claimed about him even though they were untrue. Just because he didn't leave his house, people began to think something was wrong. Boo was a man who was misunderstood and shouldn't of suffered any injustice. Boo did not handle the injustice because he didn't know about it. In conclusion, the person who deserves the deepest sympathy is Tom Robinson. He did nothing wrong but his crime was being nice to white people. This type of injustice is the worst because everyone puts up with it. Therefore, Atticus, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley suffered the most injustice in the novel.

A court placed her in a private sanatorium, but she went to court and was able to have herself declared sane. Death Suffering from a number of physical ailments, Mary Lincoln sought treatment in Canada and New York City and eventually returned to Springfield. She spent the final years of her life as a virtual recluse and died on July 16, 1882, at the age of 63. She was buried beside her husband in Springfield. Is it Time to Change the Humanities Requirement? The University’s Humanities Core represents a vital though enigmatic aspect of the curricular philosophy. Considering that the Core seems so anomalous compared to the curricula of similar universities, it is interesting to note that the Humanities Core seems to have an especially distinguished significance. For example, humanities is the only sequence which is taken almost uniformly by first year students; it is also one of two or three Core sequences that cannot be replaced by AP credits or placement tests. Perhaps most importantly, the humanities requirement may be the only part of the Core that seems to be almost universally perceived as having no application outside of the Ivory Tower. Thus we are faced with the difficult question of what distinguishes the Humanities Core from other pursuits and why it is that the University, an institution that prides itself on academic commitment and prowess, continues to place special emphasis on it. In order to confront this difficult question I will first consider the Humanities Core generally and attempt to decipher its value in terms of content and then in terms of utility; I will then turn my attention to a specific work studied in the Humanities Core and attempt to make sense of its inclusion in the curriculum. Keeping up with the Kardashians is an American reality television show that airs on primetime television. It documents the lives of the Kardashians and the Jenners. The Kardashians include Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, and Robert. They are the children of the late Robert Kardashian. The Jenners include Bruce, Kylie, Kendall, and Kris. Bruce and Kris Jenner are the parents of this blended family. Keeping up with the Kardashians became a major hit from inception. The show offers its audience the opportunity to learn more about the Kardashians. The show reveals secrets about the family that the audience wouldn’t otherwise know. For instance, it allowed the audience to learn details about scandals that took place in some of the Kardashians’ lives before they became famous. On another note, the shows does offer the conquer worldview where â€Å"striving for success is often portrayed as a test of personal resolve, requiring discipline, sacrifice, and commitment† (Silverblatt, 111). On Keeping up with the Kardashians, Kris, Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe work very hard to be successful. They are very disciplined, committed, and driven for success. They sacrifice having relationships and time with family to pursue their dreams. This is not a dominant ideology in our culture. While hard work, commitment, and discipline equal success in American culture, not too many people will sacrifice being away from their families, especially their husbands for success. Keeping up with the Kardashians can also be viewed as a contest worldview. This means that the show suggests through the characters’ actions that â€Å"success is a sport, in which people compete against one another† (Silverblatt, 111). On the most recent episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, Kim becomes very competitive to a point where she bets Kourtney $10,000 to play her in a game of chess. This bet was raised after Kim had already lost the first game of chess and had to become Kourtney’s maid for a day. Each season of America’s Next Top Model offers its audience 9-13 episodes with 10-14 contestants competing for the title of America’s Next Top Model. A contestant is eliminated on each episode of the show, which steepens the competition as the season progresses. To provide the audience with a more realistic feel for the industry, America’s Next Top Model offers drastic makeovers, personal life experiences of the contestants, gruesome challenges, traveling ventures, and extravagant living arrangements. Beauty is a huge part of the show as implied by the title of the show, but talent along with ambition plays a major role as well. According to Silverblatt, â€Å"the personal values of the media communicator are interwoven with membership in a number of subcultures based upon gender, ethical/racial identity, stage of life, and class which operate according to separate value systems. In order to identify a value system operating in a media production, it is of paramount importance to define its culture† (Silverblatt, 109). It is evident that America’s Next Top Model shares an American culture. Not only does the producer, Tyra Banks, share this same American culture, but she also shares other subcultures with her audience, which includes gender, stages of life, and race. Analyzing characters is a strategy that Silverblatt addresses as a way to identify the value system operating within media presentations. â€Å"Heroes and Heroines embody those qualities that society considers admirable. Heroes generally prevail in media entertainment programming because they embody the values that are esteemed within the culture† (Silverblatt, 109). Both Tyra Banks and the contestants of America’s Next Top Model signify beauty and talent, which are qualities that most women would love to have. These girls signify what our culture defines as model material and thus a reflection of a dominant ideology. They are tall, slim, have flawless skin, and are beautiful. These are qualities that some of the audience may either possess or admire in the contestants. â€Å"Successful media figures are in control, free to determine their own fates† (Silverblatt, 111). The contestants on the show are determined to be unique, to stand out from the crowd, and to win the title. They know that their fate on the show and for their life thereafter depends on their determination to win. These are roles that are shared by most Americans. American culture suggests that fate is in the hands of the beholder; therefore, this aspect of the show is a reflection of a dominant ideology. This implies that whatever happens in life is the sole responsibility of the individual and that success comes with being confident and in control. Run’s House is yet another American reality television show that airs on primetime television. The show introduces America to Reverend Run, also known as Run DMC, as a minister, his family, and his family life. Run’s House focuses on Reverend Run as provides parenting to his family of five children which range in age from age 8 to 21 with his loving wife, Justine. Viewers get a see Reverend Run in action as this hands-on, very involved, hip-hop gone minister dad negotiates everyday parenting challenges from the birds and the bees to helping with homework. Run’s House is a perfect example of American culture as we know it. This family of seven that consists of five children and a mother and father in the home prays together, eats together, and participate in family activities and trips together. While the children of the show still get in trouble for misbehaving or getting bad grades, they respect their parents. They seem to honor the values that they are taught and work hard to keep their parents proud. On one particular episode of the show, the audience learned that Vanessa and Angela were still virgins at age 18 and 21. In this same episode, the girls mention that they are going to wait until they are married before they engage in sexual activities. This is a lesson that is taught to many, but carried out by fewer. While this seems to be far from the norm in current day society, his aspect of the show could shape culture and have a huge impact on the younger audience who admire Angela and Vanessa. Run’s House seems to fit the Physical Ideal worldview which means that the family is admired because of the role that they play in this society. Reverend Run and his family seem to still be grounded with â€Å"old fashion† values in a society and culture where that seems to be fading, temptations are ever increasing, and infidelity is accepted. Some families no longer eat at the table together; nevertheless, pray together. In addition, some children are being raised in single family homes where the mother works most of the time. Living in a home where there are two parents that have vested interest in their children’s lives and that seem to be happy makes this family a physical ideal that most people would admire and would love to have. â€Å"Cultural studies and media literacy theories help to identify dominant ideology in media which includes primetime television† (Silverblatt, 98). The three reality television shows listed above are either deeply embedded in American culture or either shape it. For the most part, Keeping up with the Kardashians and America’s Next Top Model for the most part are both a true reflection of the contemporary dominant ideology. Run’s House on the other hand is s reflection of the modern ideology. The role that Reverend Run’s family plays in this society is more similar to Leave it to Beaver which aired in the 70’s and was very appropriate for that time. While the show had high ratings, it is not the norm compared to other reality television shows that air on primetime television.

Sexual Reproduction Types of Fertilization

In sexual reproduction, two parents donate genes to their offspring through a process called fertilization. The resulting young receives a combination of inherited genes. In fertilization, male and female sex cells or gametes fuse to form a single cell called a zygote. A zygote grows and develops by mitosis into a fully functioning individual. Fertilization is necessary for all organisms that reproduce sexually and there are two mechanisms by which fertilization can take place. These include external fertilization in which eggs are fertilized outside of the body and internal fertilization in which eggs are fertilized within the female reproductive tract. Sexual Reproduction In animals, sexual reproduction comprises the fusion of two distinct gametes to form a diploid zygote. Gametes, which are haploid are produced by cell division called meiosis. In most cases, a male gamete (spermatozoan) is relatively motile and usually has a flagellum to propel itself. A female gamete (ovum) is non-motile and often larger than a male gamete. In humans, gametes are found in male and female gonads. Male gonads are testes and female gonads are ovaries. Gonads also produce sex hormones, which are required for the development of primary and secondary reproductive organs and structures. Hermaphroditism Some organisms are neither male nor female and these are known as hermaphrodites. Animals such as sea anemones may have both male and female reproductive parts. It is possible for hermaphrodites to self-fertilize, but most mate with other hermaphrodites to reproduce. In these cases, since both parties involved become fertilized, the number of offspring is doubled. Hermaphroditism solves the problem of mate scarcity. The ability to change sex from male to female (protandry) or from female to male (protogyny) also mitigates this issue. Certain fish like wrasses may change from female to male as they mature. These alternative approaches to sexual reproduction are successful—fertilization does not need to be between a natural-born male and female to yield healthy offspring. External Fertilization External fertilization occurs mostly in aquatic environments and requires both a male and female organism to release or broadcast gametes into their surroundings (usually water). This process is called spawning. Amphibians, fish, and coral reproduce by external fertilization. External fertilization is advantageous because it results in a large number of offspring. However, due to various environmental hazards such as predators and adverse weather conditions, offspring produced in this way face numerous threats and many even die. Animals that spawn do not typically care for their young. The degree of protection an egg receives after fertilization directly impacts its survival. Some organisms hide their eggs in the sand, others carry them around in pouches or in their mouths, and some simply spawn and never see their young again. An organism that is nurtured by a parent stands a much better chance of living. Internal Fertilization Animals that use internal fertilization specialize in developing and protecting an egg. Sometimes the offspring itself is encased in an egg upon its birth and sometimes it hatches from an egg before it is born. Reptiles and birds secrete eggs covered in a protective shell that is resistant to water loss and damage in order to protect them. Mammals, with the exception of egg-laying mammals called monotremes, protect an embryo or fertilized egg within the mother as it develops. This extra protection increases the chances of survival by supplying the embryo with everything it needs until it is born via live birth. Organisms that internally fertilize care for their young for anywhere from a few months to several years after they are born.
